Match Report: Freshers Star in 1s Win

Yesterday saw the 1st team return to BUCS League action after a free week, with a home match against St Andrews 1s. The two sides before the game were joint top of the Scottish 1A Division with 18 points, but with Edinburgh having a game in hand. The match was a good opportunity to regain the top spot and remain unbeaten.

The game began with one of the quickest goals in EUWAFC history! After less than a minute, the home side went ahead with a Beth Macleod goal after capitalising on a mistake by St Andrews. The game settled afterwards, with both sides creating some chances. Both teams were quick on the break, with Edinburgh threatening down the middle with Katie Cleland, and St Andrews failing to put away a few one-on-one chances. The conditions were cold, windy, and the ground wet, making play hard, and the ground slippy.

HT - Edinburgh 1, St Andrews 0

The second half saw 3 changes - Freshers trio Carla Boyce, Colette Cavanagh and Kirsty Howat coming on for Katie Cleland, Lily Chubb and Margaux Durand-Watson. They made an immediate impact, troubling the St Andrews defence and making dangerous runs down the wings.

Edinburgh then doubled their lead when Boyce scored into the bottom corner - her first goal for the university.

Howat then scored another, after her 2 goals at home against Stirling a couple of weeks back, before Boyce then got her second of the game.

St Andrews were less dangerous in the second half, with the Edinburgh back four often picking up through balls. The away side also conceded a few fouls, particularly when Howat made mazey runs down the right wing.

Edinburgh won a penalty for a foul inside the box on Howat, with Macleod stepping up to calmy put it away.

Captain Courtney McAvoy got herself a goal just before the final whistle, to make it 6-0 and a strong victory for EUWAFC 1s!

This was also an important win before they take on York at home in the British Trophy next week.

Man of the match: was a tie between a number of players, including Cavanagh, Macleod, Caroline Coughlan, Howat, Boyce, Cleland and McAvoy!
