Match Report: 2nd Team Record Their First Win in Division 1
Wednesday 12th October saw the Edinburgh 2nd team take on Robert Gordon University (RGU) at home in their 3rd fixture of the season. The game kicked off at 2pm with Edinburgh fielding a new formation with some players trying out new positions, one of which being Rachel Thomson who - usually played as a full-back - started up front.
The risk paid off straight away as 10 minutes in Amy Gilroy played a corner into the penalty spot for Rachel Thomson to put it high into the net above the RGU keeper. Edinburgh kept up the pressure but a good pass from RGU saw their striker through on goal 1 on 1 with the keeper where she put it in the back of the net to equalise. Then a high ball played from midfield saw Eva Steele 1 on 1 with the keeper where she was able to slot it home to put Edinburgh back in the lead. Shortly after Amy Gilroy broke through on the left wing where she was able to cut in and finish near post, making the score 3-1. A short while later Rachel Thomson popped up again to score her second of the game and Edinburgh's 4th. A fantastic ball from Jodie Ovens then found Eva Steele who placed it past the keeper for her 2nd of the game. Two more were scored before half-time as Amy Gilroy beat the defence for pace to put it past the keeper for her second, before Rachel Thomson sealed her hat-trick shortly before half-time following a good ball into the box, leaving the score 7-1 at half-time.
The second half got underway and it wasn't long before Edinburgh resumed their goal rout with Rachel Thomson scoring her 4th of the game from another Amy Gilroy corner to make it 8-1. Katie Macdonald then played Jodie Ovens in behind the defence to make it 9-1, before Rebecca Gray cut in from the right to beat a defender and put it past the keeper making it 10-1. Then to finish off, 10 minutes before the end of the game, Jodie Ovens played a good cross to the back post where she found the head of Amy Gilroy to leave the final score at 11-1.
Man of the match went to Rachel Thomson for her 4 goals and dominating performance upfront. The 2nd team will take plenty of positives from this game going forwards into their clash against St. Andrew's next week as they continue to battle with some of the best teams in Scotland in the 1st Division.
