Match Report: 3rd Team Unlucky to be out of Conference Cup

Wednesday 2nd November saw the 3s play at home having drawn

Strathclyde in the first round of theConference Cup.

The first half saw Edinburgh dominate, continually forcing early clearances combined with steady play keeping Strathclyde in their own half for the first 20 minutes of the game. Eventually however, Strathclyde broke through, putting a goal past Edinburgh at the 30th minute. Defensively Edinburgh continued strongly, with goalkeeper Katharine Grant making a spectacular save after a shot at close range from Strathclyde. Edinburgh were eventually rewarded with their first goal from Bel O Nunain, who secured the rebound from a free kick curled in by Lyndsey McKay leaving it 1-1 at half time.

Both teams returned ready for battle in the 2nd half, with several breaks down both the left and right wings leading to a breakthrough to striker Hannah Fowley, who found Bel O Nunain to put a second past Strathclyde around the 55th minute. With 10 minutes left, Strathclyde edged one past the defence to equalise. Several chances to edge ahead were missed by Edinburgh with a narrowly missed header by Nikoletta Luca and a rebound off the cross bar for Hannah Fowley. In the final 3 minutes, a successful corner from Strathclyde made it 3-2, with Strathclyde striker and Edinburgh goalkeeper both injured after a collision in the box.

After a closely fought match, unfortunately the final score of 3-2 left Edinburgh 3s out of the cup for this season. Players’ player of the match was Bel O Nunain and Coach’s player of the match went to keeper Katherine Grant.
