Match Report: 3rd Team Triumphant in First Game Back

Wednesday 12th October saw our 3rd team take on Queen Margaret University Women’s 1st team (QMU) in their first league game of the season. With new coach Laura Thomson in charge, the 3s came into the game confident from a narrow pre-season win against rivals University of St Andrew’s 3rds. There was also a large turn out from the Edinburgh 1s and 2s who were there to support, including head coach Mike Ross and former 3rd team coach Tom Connor.

The game began evenly, with several strong shots on goal from both sides. A foul awarded to Edinburgh saw a magnificent free kick taken by Lyndsey MacKay, who curled the ball around QMU's wall and just beyond their goalkeeper’s fingertips to make it 1-0. Shortly after, a through ball left Nikoletta Luca 2 on 1 at QMU's goal, only to successfully slide the ball into the bottom right corner making it 2-0. A cohesive back four held off strong opponents until half time. Early in the 2nd half however, QMU broke through to put one past the home side making it 2-1. After a series of injuries for the away side delayed play and several chances collapsed due to offsides from Edinburgh, a drawn out battle down the left wing allowed midfielder Lulu Tucker to swing the ball in above the heads of four defenders to making it 3-1. In the 70th minute Bel O Nunain made the most of her club debut by driving up from defence to power the ball into the bottom right corner. The game ended 4-1 to Edinburgh, an excellent start to the season and an improvement on the teams’ last meeting in the 15/16 season.

Players’ player of the match went to co-captain Sara Missaghian and coaches’ player of the match to vice-captain Hannah Fowley for tirelessly putting the opposition under pressure up-front.
