Match Report: Good Start to 1s Title Defence
Wednesday 28th September saw the start of the new season, and with both the 1st and 2nd XI competing in the top division, it is more competitive than ever.
Day 1 of the season saw the 1s play at home against Glasgow, in what proved to be very tough conditions. Strong winds affected both sides and the game got off to a scrappy start at Peffermill's stadium pitch. Both sides had some chances in the first quarter of the game, with Beth Macleod just slotting the ball wide for the home side. Then Edinburgh broke the deadlock, with a neat through ball to Macleod who finished with a low drive into the corner of the goal. Fresher Colette Cavanagh doubled the hosts lead with her first goal in a competitive game for the club.
After half time, both sides started out strongly, adjusting to the difficult weather conditions. But it was Edinburgh who extended their lead, with another goal for Cavanagh and Margaux Durand-Watson getting their fourth goal. They dominated possession, creating many chances. Cavanagh sealed her hatrick with a curling strike from outside the box which dipped under the Glasgow goalkeeper.
Glasgow created some problems in the second half, with many attempts at goal being thwarted by the Edinburgh defence, while McAvoy and Cavanagh continued to cause problems in midfield.
Overall it was a difficult match for both sides, and an exciting game at points, but Edinburgh put on a great team performance and took all 3 points.
Man of the match went to Colette Cavanagh for a brilliant display in midfield and a fantastic hatrick!
Final score: EUWAFC 1s 5-0 Glasgow
