1s Through to Another Semi Final

The 1st team were the only EUWAFC side in action this Wednesday, facing Edinburgh Napier in the Quarter finals of the Scottish Student Sport Cup. As current holders of the Cup, EUWAFC were hoping to get a win and seal their place in the Semi Finals.

The windy conditions made the game difficult for both sides throughout the whole match, and gameplay was relatively slow for large periods. Edinburgh had the majority of possession against a Napier side who play in the 3rd Division. Napier were keen to get shots away from the edge of the box, but otherwise did not often break down the Edinburgh back four. Then the breakthrough finally came from Edinburgh, with Jodie Ovens getting a well deserved goal. However on the stroke of halftime, Napier grabbed a goal against the run of play after a miscommunication by Edinburgh. This allowed an opposing player to cut inside and finish from the edge of the box.

HT: Napier 1-1 EUWAFC 1s

The second half saw the scrappy play continue, largely down to the weather conditions, Edinburgh again with most of the possession, but struggling to break Napier down. Then in the 70th minute Edinburgh broke through again: this time with a great long ball from Lucy Stanton through to Grete Wilson, who finished clinically. From then on Edinburgh dominated and started to pick up. Into the 80th minute, a scuffle in the box resulted in last years top scorer Beth Macleod striking the ball high into the middle of the net. Now 3-1. Just before full time and Rachel Mickelson got a final goal for Edinburgh, heading in Ovens cross.

FT: Napier 1-4 EUWAFC 1s

A tough game which was slowed down and made difficult by the weather, but a good challenge against a promising Napier side and confirming another semi final match against Stirling 1s.

Man of the match: Grete Wilson, who had a solid game and proved to be a constant threat on the attack.
