Girls who can do both. (Masters and Football)
Just got your university results and are coming to Edinburgh for your masters?!?! Congratulations on all your hard work and good luck in the year(s) ahead, I know all at Edinburgh are super excited to meet you in September. In Particular EUWAFC thrives off masters students adding A LOT of experience to the club and in return we like to think we give as much back. We hope you will consider joining EUWAFC too! Here are some of our own girls enrolled on Masters courses explaining why EUWAFC is the only extra-curricular club to join next year. In response we got some of their teammates to reflect on how the club has similarly benefited from the addition of masters students in 2018/19!
1. Kristina Kim.
What is your masters in? "Public Health."
Which team did you play in? "First Team"
Why did you decide to join EUWAFC while doing your masters? "Having played competitively in the US at university level, I wanted to be able to continue playing while doing my masters. Edinburgh offered me this unique opportunity and I have loved every minute of it."
What is your highlight of EUWAFC?
"EUWAFC welcomed me with open arms, providing a competitive, yet enjoyable and social football atmosphere. I have made some amazing memories with the club both on and off the pitch. My highlights of the year were winning the Scottish Student Sport Cup and beating Nottingham Trent to earn promotion to the Northern Premier League. I'm also very thankful for my teammates, who have been class and become some of my best friends. Hopefully, I can still be involved with EUWAFC in the future (PhD anyone?) and help the club reach even greater heights".
Katie Macdonald (2019/20 Health and Well-being officer and fellow first team player) on Kristina Kim: "Having Kristina joining our club was so exciting for so many reasons. On the Pitch she brought a wealth of experience from playing at a high level during her undergraduate studies. However, more importantly, off the pitch it's been amazing to get to know her and her love of good coffee and pretty walks. Kristina is one of the most wise people I've ever met and has been an incredible teammate and role model for our younger players this year. She is always there if you ever need a chat. We hope she can stick around to continue recommending us cafes across Ed and scoring worldie headers in the Northern Premier League!! I hope she has enjoyed her year as much as EUWAFC have loved having her."
2. Tess Jakubec.
What is your masters in? "Landscape Architecture"
Which team did you play in? "Second Team"
Why did you decide to join EUWAFC while doing your masters? " I joined football in my second year of my masters because I was looking for a way to meet new people outside of my program and missed being part of a team and playing the sport."
What is your highlight of EUWAFC? "The matches were great and there were many highlights to choose from. One of the most memorable times for me was one of the socials at the beginning of the year. It was really fun and a great chance to bond, particularly with girls on different teams'.
Sophie Winterbourne (2019/20 Recreational Football officer and fellow 2nd team player) on Tess Jakubec: "I'm so glad that Tess decided to play football this year. As a fellow newbie to the team it was so fun getting to know her on and off the pitch. We've had a lot of fun together at football, socials and on trips. Hopefully Tess decides to stay on in Edinburgh, I would love to join her weekly pub quizzes! I wish her all the best in the future."
3. Sophie Groeneveld
What is your masters in? "Global Health Policy"
Which team did you play in? "Third Team"
Why did you decide to join EUWAFC while doing your masters? "I just really enjoy playing football and it was a good distraction after a busy day of uni. It helped clear my mind when I trained."
What is your highlight of EUWAFC? "Winning most of our matches to come second in the league and the welcoming atmosphere of the team."
Fiona Graham (2019/20 Recreational Football Officer and fellow 3rd team player) on Sophie Groeneveld: "It's been great to play alongside Sophie in the 3s this year, and I'm so impressed she's juggled studying for her Masters degree with playing both football and touch rugby! She's been a solid part of the 2s defence making her key to our BUCS success and I wish her all the best for the future! I'm sure Sophie has inspired lots of us who have plans to do a post grad to make sure we keep playing football just like she has!"
