Last Wednesday saw the 1st team kick off their Scottish 1A League campaign with a 3-1 home victory over Glasgow 1s. The game, played on the Peffermill Stadium Pitch, involved many new EUWAFC players making their debut for the university team.
The game, kicking off at 5pm, started equally with chances in the opening few minutes for both teams. After 17 minutes, Edinburgh broke the deadlock with a great team goal involving Beth Macleod, Hannah Craig and finished by debutant Eleanor Patrick. Little over 2 minutes later, Glasgow responded by slotting home a one on one through on goal. The latter half of the first half threw up more chances for Edinburgh, with a strong header from Sarah Thompson saved by the goalkeeper and and chances from Craig and Sophie Boeckh. The first half finished 1-1.
The second half saw Edinburgh make a change, with another debut for Kayla Duverger, replacing former 2s player Olivia Fraser. Within 6 minutes Edinburgh scored again with another debutant, Claire Farquhar, finishing after a great run. Afterwards there was a lack of clear cut chances for either team, but with Edinburgh retaining most of the possession, Chances for Macleod and Chubb were cleared by the Glasgow defence and high over the bar respectively, before Farquhar hit the crossbar in her hunt for a second goal. Edinburgh eventually extended their lead only a couple of minutes from full time with Margaux Durand-Watson, having replaced Patrick for the last five minutes, scoring with one of her first touches after the ball fell to her feet after a shot from Boeckh struck the goalkeeper.
Full time: Edinburgh win 3-1
Player of the Match: Sophie Boeckh, with a fantastic performance in midfield, creating many chances and shifting the ball well from left to right.
