Match Report: 3 goals and 3 points for the 3s

Edinburgh's 3rd team travelled to Glasgow this Wednesday to challenge Glasgow Caledonian University in the second league game of the season. Edinburgh arrived determined to improve on last season’s narrow 3-2 victory against Cali, and confident from their first league game success against QMU.

The first half saw scrappy play from both sides, with Edinburgh focusing on supporting their back 4 to defend a series of overhead attacks from Cali. Edinburgh soon gained their footing however, as a timely switch of play allowed Sara Missaghian to play a neat through ball to striker Nikoletta Louca, who kept her cool to place the ball past Cali’s centre back and keeper into the left corner of the net. Approaching the half time whistle, Edinburgh lost their lead following a brief scuffle after a Cali corner leaving it 1-1 at half-time.

The second half saw the Edinburgh 3s spurred on by the 2nd team who turned out to provide vocal support. An improvement in possession eventually awarded them with their second goal by vice-captain Hannah Fowley who, assisted by a low cross from Becca Bolton, secured a left footed strike into the top right of the net. A foul against Laila Khayami drove the team forward to their 3rd goal from Bel O Nunain, apparently making a habit of her 70th minute goals from close range. No further drama from either team and the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.

The game closed with the teams having fought for over 100 minutes, final score 3-1 to Edinburgh 3s. This leaves the Edinburgh second in the league table only to Napier, who has the advantage of one more fixture under their belt. Player’s player of the match and Coach’s player of the match went to Becca Bolton for her excellent performance in the midfield.
